Discussion Forum #7

The Reformation was a remarkable time of change and renewal where our eyes have been opened to the truth of God's love, the sufficiency of His Word, and need for constant reformation of this world.  Indeed, it was a milestone in the life of the Church carefully orchestrated by God Himself.

For this week's discussion, describe the significant accomplishments of the Reformation and how the church should continually uphold the pursuits of Luther, Zwingli, and Calvin.

  1. One important thing that i'll be pointing out as one of the great accomplishments of the Reformation is that it put Scripture to where it really belonged. When we look at the practices and beliefs of the church before the time of the Reformation, we can find that Scripture is of less value. Beliefs and practices were not base on the teaching of the Scripture. But when the time of Reformation began, the Scripture became the highest authority. People like Zwingli opposed the false teachings of the church; teachings like infant baptism and sacraments as source of saving grace. He pointed out that salvation is by faith alone. Not only that, other teachings was also corrected and changed it into Biblical based.
One way of continually upholding the pursuits of the Reformers is for the church to educate their people about the importance of the Scripture. it should be taught that Scripture is the basis or standard of a person's living. i find this important because in our generation today, the church has the tendency to neglect the teaching of the Scripture because of too much focus on finding ways to reach out to others that sometimes we are already out of boundaries. Just like the Reformers who were very zealous on following the teaching of the Scripture, so as today's generation, we should also do the same.

    1. Great idea Jess. This is indeed true. We should put the scripture to where it belong and we should teach God's people about the value of the Bible. :-)

    2. The scripture is indeed the only sole authority for the basis of our Christian faith and values in life. Forgetting it will only mean a disaster in our life. Let us go back to the basics where Jesus Christ is the center of our lives, not the traditions or whatsoever and the Scripture is on top of all.

    3. Basing in God's Word is really the similarity of the reformists...and it has indeed opened themind of the people who practiced the practices they thought were according to the Bible..it also gave the people to correct their belief and encourages people even now to read and study God's Word..

  2. Martin Luther successfully convinced some of the people to believe that the salvation is not by paying indulgence- it cannot be bought.By using his printing press and writings for the intelligent people long ago, this controversy resulted to, though wasn't right as our ideals, open the way for the people to think critically to what kind of belief they believed in. This success paved the way for them to search for what is true. They began to consider what the Bible says about many things they do. It may be a small glimpse of how God is working through the imperfect world but eventually had made it to this they that we, as Christians now believed in the Sola Scriptura.

    1. It's really true that what the church had experienced before the reformation and during the reformation all points out to the plan of God, which is for the truth to be known to people. Even in what seems to be a world full confusion about what is true and not, we can always find that God is at work and He will never stop working through the events he allows the people to experience.

  3. well for me reformation has done very significant impacts. first of all, it has re'instate the means of salvation going back to what the Bible has teaches. with it the center of salvation is the act of God, not the person of pope. this implies that no other standard and authority on the way we live aside from the Scripture alone. this assest that God alone should be the one that we ought to follow. also, this has opened to boader kind of check and balance. what i mean is that because we have the Bible, we can check wheter what he hear from our recognized head/leader is what really the Bible teaches. i mean, at their time the word of the pope seems to be the word from the Lord, it will not matter anymore wheter it is really true or not as long as the pope has said it. but through reformation, the minds where opened to stand on what is right. that is very significant bcoz is draws to acknowledgement that God is all-powerful. what i mean is that, reformation denies the power of pope to forgive sin. and that is very true. its an abomination to God, also it implants wrong belief to people.
in our generation we can continually uphold the reformation's pursuit through standing firm in our beliefs and doctrine. i mean though the issue is already settle, it doesnt mean that its over. we cannot deny the fact that a lot of deceptions now arise for example the prosperity gospel. christian must continue to show our distinction being a new creation by walking on what we talk, we are not to compromise to wrong practices, sample with regards to politics and etc. we have our firm ground on upholding what the Scripture says.

    1. yezzz bradder. What you said is really true. there are lots of deceptions thats going on in our world today in regards with religion. Indeed, standing firm to what we believe as right takes courage as we pursue it. That our faith must rely only to what the Bible says and not to any word of man.

    2. Yeah, you're right brad... i think salvation will be too hard, stressful and unjoyous because that misconception as well as the life to live. Most likely it's hard living the life when you are not assured and secured and live the life being deceived by such false idea.

  4. There are a lot of accomplishments that the reformation achieves and some of them are significant. I think putting God’s word as our authority and standard Christian living is one of the significant accomplishments of the reformation. As we study the teachings and the doctrines that the Roman Catholic practice and teaches, we can really see that they are no longer biblical to their belief. There are a lot of practices and rituals that no longer speak the truth of God. There are a lot of teaching that no longer center to Jesus Christ. They no longer put the scripture as the highest form of authority. They had made their own means of authority. They created pope in level to the authority of the scripture. Whatever the pope spoke, it’s the final authority. In short, following the desires of human away from the guidance of the scripture drives all this wrong doctrines and practice. So when the reformation put the scripture as our final authority, it just breaks through and pierces all the wrong practice and teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. With the help of the reformist Luther, Zwingli, and Calvin the Roman Catholic were alarm that the scripture should be our basis of our faith and practice. All they’ve wanted was that the Roman Church should go back to what the scripture is telling to us.
To continue uphold the pursuit of Luther, Zwingli, and Calvin every churches should be educated about the history of the church and the contribution of these reformist. The church must be educated on how we got our doctrine today. The church must be taught that this reformist made the way to break the chain of false doctrine and wrong practice. Thus we as the church of God must go back to the scripture, just what this reformist did, to see to it if we are biblical or have swayed from the truth in the Bible.

  5. Though Zwingli had gone mainstream (blend with what the people believed), especially the elite in the government to gain their sympathy and future support, this never hesitated the Christian's who were in his influence, fought for what they believe- that is not to consider unbiblical practices. Another, this is how God uses his people though imperfect yet adheres the truth. We notice can notice that as Christians, adhere what the bible says, are very strong to do what only the bible says- which was the will of God. Therefore, this reformation made an impact to the Christians that made them courageous of their belief.

  6. The Reformation's significant accomplishments were a movement of bringing back to the basics of faith where almost everybody forgot about it. The movement was supposed to be an eye opener to Roman Catholic church leaders but it wasn't for them. By bringing back to basics about faith and the sole authority was the Scripture of the movement, it was like facing the giants since the oppositions were the church and state. The cause of the movement was never in vain. It spread to the other parts of the country that caused other to side with them. What the Reformation did was a wake up call to the people. It was a solid move to oppose false doctrines that was lurking for years in the church.
The church should upholds the pursuits of them because it is a right move to bring back what has been forgotten for ages, the authority of the Scripture and it's basis for our faith and how we live. The church should remember that and not put any additions besides the Scripture.

  7. God is really GREAT!...His mighty hands can really be seen working on the reformation of the church. He used great men to show what is the truth. Luther, Zwingly, and Calvin although didn't agree in some beliefs were unquestionably did a great part in going back to what does the Word of God really says about the practices that were widely practiced in their time and found out how far it become from what the Bible really says, some of it even contradicts the Bible...the reformation was also significant because it was the time that the people were given a chance to correct what they believed for how many years that were wrong.,, it also give the chance for the people to start read the Bible and study it directly..the reformation even though had not been easy for the reformist, experienced imprisonment, persecution, and even death was successful, because now we can see the outcome of it...
As of now, many catholics still cling on to what they believe is true, of course not just them but also other cults, because of that the church also needs to uphold the pursuits of those reformists..by studying the Bible itself just like what they did and share the truth to others, also living a life that making God as the supreme of all not just the church...

  8. The Reformation in Luther's time served as an eye opener for every people mainly the Roman Catholics who believed that mans offerings ( indulgencies) can give pardon for sin which neglected the forgiveness through Christ. These people were not anymore standing with God's truth but having a destorted hearts and minds, living with all those lies given to them by their creativ minds. With Luther felt unsatisfaction and that something went very wrong stands for what is right stating that the Scripture is the highest authority, supported and continued by Swingli who also aimed to restore the ancient history which is the- Scripture and emphasized its sole authority. This impacted and created a big change to many people. It influenced intellectually and emotionally aspect of those who believe that what their teaching is true. The Reformation corrected and changed a lot of heretical stands and all those things that the Bible did not teach. Pass on to us now that we can freely read the Scripture having this thought in our mind that the Bible is the only truth which we stand for beceause it is the Word of God.

  9. The reformation before made a great impact to our church today. it helps the people to be open of what is the truth. Martin Luther made a great history to our churches but not only him alone there are also people who continue what he was started. just like Zwingli and Calvin they also participate or lead people to the reformation. They are influenced by Luther and encourage by what he fought for. They have different stands, but the goal or purpose of what they are doing is inline to each other. they want a reform specially to the wrong teaching of the Roman Catholic church namely indulgence for salvation and many other wrong teaching. God has a purpose of everything and i do believe that God is at work in all situation specially to the reformist. God uses them so that people of the world will be open. Also the factors that made the reformation successful are used by God. it is important to know this especially to the Christians and even to the Roman Catholic so that they also may appreciate that God is at work at all times and in every situation in our life. things are changing just like what happen to the reformation, but the scripture cannot be change as what those reformation stand that the scripture is the authority. upon knowing it we have the confident that we cant be wrong if our life is inline in Christ and in his word.

  10. The Reformation era is an important point of history for the church for God used the lives of brave man in drawing the people to the Word of God as it should be. First, Martin Luther fought against the doctrine of indulgence which defaulted the grace of God into something that can be bought. Salvation is a free gift from God and in no way can be bought or worked for. Secondly, there was Zwingli. He taught that salvation is free, priesthood of all believers and protested against the force celibacy of the clergy which cannot be found in the Scripture. There was also John Calvin. He wrought many doctrinal books which is helpful for Christian belief concerning issues of faith. Most importantly, these men returned to the authority of the Scripture for belief and conduct.
Today's church should do everything it can to uphold the revolutionary change started by the Reformation because failure to do so means taking the light from the already darkened world. We can do it by continually passing on to others and faithful men and women who will also teach the Truth to others. The cycle of discipleship must be a lifestyle for every Christian.

  11. Reformation bring about great impact especially on the importance of Scriptures. We know that God's word is of less importance before. But thank God for His divine intervention that brought about a big difference in those times. He used people to rise up and fight for what is right. Zwingli opposed the false teachings of the church. For us Christians we really have to sincerely feel the need of telling the truth to those who are still lost or else they will continue to live in sin and walk in darkness. We have a great mission and we have to give our best to accomplish it all for God's glory. We have the truth in us. We should not hide it but proclaim it.

  13. The reformation has made a great impact to the churches today. looking back to the history we can really see how God used courageous men to fight for the orthodoxy of the scripture's teaching. God is sovereign and in control of everything, the preservation of truth that we believe to day. however part of this are men he chose, Luther who fight against the church teaching for salvation. another man is Zwingli who oppose the teaching of the church and those practices which is not written in the scripture. the other one is Calvin who wrote doctrinal books that help christian belief until today.
thank God for the lives of these men. it's an encouragement to for us to day continue to share the truth to the lost.

  14. The achievements are an eye opener. It open the ways back to the truth which is the Bible. That the Bible is the final authority and standard of living. That what the Bible says is the Word of God and must be the only one to be followed and believed. Also, not just an eye opener, they are an encouragement because it leads other people to come out and fight for what they believed according to the Bible. That it brings people to have the right relationship with God and worship Him in the right way.
Now about the church, we can uphold this by continuously stand to what the Bible says and not to compromise to wrong practices even if it takes our life. That we will continuously tell the truth to the people through evangelism, education, conferences and etc. That the church must know how and why there are different churches and doctrine exist. That we will not stop what the early reformists did for the sake of the truth,

    1. yez braddd,. indeed. wat you have said is true. i mean in today's generation i see same situation as before, that whenever time comes of unpleasant things that happens, it takes someone to stand on the truth, yet for sure it wud not be easy. it will take great courage. in our lives, we are to show the distinction of being a true christian not compromising to the wrong practices.
amen to your ways of upholding. i see similar things too dat somehow honestly is difficult to do but by God's strength, we can to do it.

  16. The Focal point about the Reformation is the authority of the scripture being depended by the reformers and the struggles about man maid ideas that was being practiced by some - the Roman Catholic. I feel so glad seeing people fighting the authority of the Scripture. God is so good and intelligent enough in making things work for His glory. He uses a lot of people in order to correct the wrong, He uses painful situation as part of the plan in fulfilling everything. Through that reforms, we able to see the difference of the belief and practices from the others and saw some unbiblical things that was practiced and taught.
What troubles me in today's generation is that the authority of the scripture was given less importance and it seems like it was happening again like in doing or making plans, shared ideas, strategies applied, and teachings that are not biblical. If you can observe some of the programs being followed are not Biblically based some are just done out of popularity. Even in teachings there are Pastors and teachers today that are coward in telling what's the truth and what really the Bible is talking about. They just used the Bible as reference of what they wanted to hear. Some teaches the Bible but coated it with sugar so that audience will have fun listening to it and appreciate it. If we compare in what happen in the past most likely its just repeat itself. The scripture was been twisted for their own good and they will be benefited from it. In 2 Timothy 3:16-17 " All scripture is God's breath and it is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness so that the man of God will thoroughly be equipped for every good work." Continue to Correct according to the Bible, Teach according to the Bible, Rebuke according to the Bible and Train according to the Bible, it takes courage to do it and let's stand to it, and do not compromise what's the Truth its speaks. The problem in the past was they were not able to emphasize the authority of the holy scripture rather they emphasized themselves.
