Discussion Forum #9

Many of our church members have a Catholic background so the belief of lesser mediating gods are almost always embedded in their concept of relating with God. Let's say that you are planning to teach a class in church this Sunday to teach your people that the idea of mediating beings is not necessary for a Christian.

Present your lesson plan in the comment box below.  Include scripture references and the main points of your lesson.

  1. Goal:

at the end of the class the students will be able to feel firm by their trust to Jesus by studying HIM
at the end of the class the students will be able to speak out his idea about the topic.

    1. yeah brother. i think you have the idea of letting them first understand the need of why there should be a mediator. also, after that, why Jesus is only the way to God. its because it will give the general view going to spicifc. and thats because of our total depravity, we are away from God. because of sins comitted. your lesson plan is good.

  2. Age Group: 17-19
    Title: The Imminent God
Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to..
    (a) share their concept about God
    (b) respond to the truth learned about God
    (c) tell others about God

    Text: Psalm 139:7-10; Matthew 1:23

    HOOK
At the beginning of the class, ask this question to these students: "What is your concept about God? Is he a God who is far or not?". Then allow them to share their thoughts about it.

    BOOK
I- God is not a distant God (Psalm 139:7-10)
Our God is an omnipresent (present everywhere) God. Wherever we go, God will be there also.

II- God is always with us (Matthew 1:23)
God may not be with us anymore in flesh but His presence is always with us.

Application: Our God is not a distant God. He is always with us therefore we don't need anyone to intercede with us so that we can relate to God because we can go directly, personally to Him anytime, anywhere.

    LOOK
Now that you already learn that God is not a distant God, how are you going to respond with this truth? Find a partner then share to one another your response.

    TOOK
Pray for a specific Catholic friend. Ask him/her more what their concept about God is then share to that friend what you have learned today. Write your experience in a one whole paper and tell more about what you have learn with your conversation with that friend.

  3. Text: John 2:1-11
Title: Jesus Christ the miracle doer
Big Idea: Jesus is the only way.
Introduction: Have you tried calling for help?

    I. The situation (v. 1-3)
    A. How was Mary called? (Ans. mother of God) What does it mean?
    Look at ff. verses:
    *Mark 3:31-35
    * Matt. 1:20, 25
    *Phil. 2:5-7
Note: Mary is the human mother of Jesus Christ but in no way called God. She was just a vessel for the King of kings and Lord of lords to accomplish his mission. In fact, she acknowledge that she needed salvation as well (Luke 1:46-48)
    B. What did Mary tell Jesus Christ? Does it mean she is a mediator?
    Look at ff. verses:
    *1 Tim. 2:5
    ` * Heb. 8:6
    *Heb. 12:24
Note: Jesus Christ is the only Mediator between God and man. There is no one else.

    II. The action (v. 4-8)
    A. What did Jesus addressed Mary? (Ans. woman)
    B. What did Jesus do?

    III. The glorification (v.9-11)
    A. How did the miracle affect their life?
    B. How is God glorified?

    Conclusion:
God does miracle in each of our life. He does it own of His own will and answers our prayers when it is enlign with His will. There is no other Mediator between God and man besides Jesus Christ.

  4. Text: John 8:12; 14:6
Title: Only God Can Truly Hear and Answers Prayers

    Objective:
    1. The young people will be able to give the importance of prayer and what prayer means to them
    2. The young people will be able to feel the importance of praying directly to God and to God only through the verses I will present and let them meditate: Exo.20:4-6; Jer.33:3; Matt.21:22.
    3. The young people will be able to memorize at least three verses that will always remind them that only God can truly hear and answers prayers and they will share in a group what truths they have learned.

HOOK: Ask: How important prayer is to you? Do you really believe that God will hear and answer your prayers when you pray directly to Him? (I will ask one of them to share one of his/her prayers that God has answered).

BOOK: I will remind them that they already have a new life in Christ (1 Cor.5:17) and they are not in darkness anymore (John 12:46). God commanded us to love the Him with all our heart, with all our soul, and with all our mind (Matt.22:37). The word “all” here clearly emphasized that we should do it wholeheartedly and not halfheartedly. Also if we claim to have God in our lives, we should live a life that pleases Him and we will never walk in darkness anymore (John 8:12).
I will tell them these important truths:
    A. Jesus is the only way to God (John 14:6)
I will emphasize here that we don't need to consider those mediating beings when we pray because through Jesus we are now given the access and the right to approach God directly in our prayers.

    B. God is a jealous God and He hates idolatry (Exo.20:4-6).
I will emphasize here that God don't want that we still have gods in our lives. He wants our undivided heart fully devoted to Him as we worship Him. For when we pray, we are also offering our worship to God and He alone should be the the object of our worship and there should be nothing else.

    C. Only God Can Truly Hear and Answers Prayer (Jer.33:3; Matt.21:22)
I will remind them that those mediating beings is not necessary for they can't hear and answer prayers.

    LOOK:
I will give them verses to look upon their Bible and they will discuss it in their own group.
(1 Cor.5:17; Jer.33:3; Matt.21:22; John 14:6) and they will pray for one another after sharing.

    TOOK:
They will choose one or two verses from the Bible verses being discussed and memorize it and they will write their personal application or reflection in accordance to what they truly understand.

  5. Sunday School Class
    Age Target: 13-18 years old
    Topic: “The mediating gods”
    Text: 2 Cor. 17-19;Matt. 6-8;1 Tim. 2:5
    Goals:
At the end of the class, the students will be able to understand that we don't need mediating gods and must not pray to or through them.
At the end of the class the students will be able to express what they believe about it before and after studying what the Bible teaches about it.
At the end of the class the students will be able to think of an action they need to do about the truth they now know.
Hook: I will let them play the game “I Ask You, Ask Me, through the Mediator”.
Mechanics: they will be divided into two teams. In each team, they will choose one member to be their “ask me” then one another member who will be their “I ask you”. Then the rest of the members will fall in line and will be the mediators. There will be different items in a table. The “I ask you” will choose one of those and will also choose one from the mediators. The “I ask you” will tell his chosen mediator the item he chose without letting others to know it except the facilitator. Then in 30 seconds the mediator will try to act out the item that was chosen by the “I ask you”to the “ask me” without pointing anything in the table or outside the table. Within that 30 seconds the “ask me” will try to guess the item that is being act out within the items in the table only but will only have 2 attempt to guess. The team that have more points will win.
Transition: in this game we really appreciate the help of the mediator because of the rule given but if the “I ask you” can tell what he chooses to the “ask me” is it more easier, I can say that it will be a lot easier. Now do you think we also need mediators to ask God something need or want? Just like what other people do. They ask for the other saints, believing that their prayer will be heard by God more easier if they will ask the saints to tell God, rather than themselves telling God?

    Book:
Intro: Is it easier for us if we ask God directly want we want, rather than asking someone who was dead to tell it to Him? And what does the Bible tells about praying to or through the patrons or other saints, specially Mary?
    I. Jesus Christ died for the reconciliation of our relationship to God (2 Cor. 17-19)
    - we can now ask God directly
II. God knows everything we need even before we ask for it (Matt. 6-8)
    - so no need to tell others because He knows it already but command us to pray to Him alone.
    - God is powerful enough to hear our prayers , so praying through the patrons is like limiting God's power.
III. No verse in the Bible that showed we must pray to other saints.
    - what's the reason of doing it?
IV. We only have a Mediator; Jesus Christ (1 Tim. 2:5)
    - Jesus Christ is our only Mediator, because He is the only way to have eternal life with God.
Look: God is all-knowing, present everywhere, all-powerful, and never changes. His attributes are more than enough for us to doubt. He is also a jealous God, He wants us to pray to Him only and praise Him only.
Took: They will be given a paper then without writing their names, they will write what they believe about the mediating gods before and now and what are they going to do now, knowing the truth about it.

  7. Text: 1 Tim. 2:5
    Goal:
at the end of the class the student will know the power of God and Jesus Christ is the mediator between man and God.

    I. There is only one God (1 Tim. 2:5)
    Note: more verses Deut. 4:35;, 36; 6:4; 1 Kings 8:60; Isa. 40:18; James 2:19)
Share this verses and explain to them this verses one by one.
Note: Because God is only one.
    A. He is all powerful.(Isa. 46:9-10; Ex. 6:3)
    B. He Knows everything. (Isa. 55:8-9; 1 Cor. 2:10-11)
II. There is only one mediator. (1 Tim. 2:5)
    A. It is Jesus alone. (1 Tim,2:5, Acts 4:12)
Note: Jesus is the way, the truth, and life no can compare in him.
III. There is only One solution. (Jesus alone)

Conclusion: Only one in the universe is our mediator and can stand between us and God and bring us together again, Jesus who is both God and man. Jesus sacrifice brought new life to all people.

And end in this question: Have you let Him bridge the gap between you and God?

    II. text: Luke 15:11-31
    II. intro: Question
what is the purpose on having a birth certificate. i t just a peace of paper but it is importance to us. how about our ID... it is very common in school gate posted "NO ID NO ENTRY". how that small thing defined us? here's a thing, your birth certificate prove legally that your child of your parents. your parents owned you and you owned your parents right? ID card verified your identity.
now what is your identity as christian? what is your position in God?
IV. story of "the lost son"
    1. the father has two sons
    2. the youngest ask his share of inheritance and went away.
    3. squandered all his money and decided to go home with nothing.
    4. the oldest is obedience to his father and got jealous to his brother.

it seems that the older son forget his identity as son of his father that he can have if he could ask.
    VII.
-We are His children ( Jn. 1:12)
the moment we accept that Jesus Christ is our Lord and savior God make us as His children. we belong to His family.
    - we are an heir (Gal.4:7)
co heir with Christ. like the son of the father who really knows his inheritance. he confidently ask to his father his share he did not ask anybody to talk his father on his behalf.
God is reachable every time we come to Him He is always free and will listen to us. ask whatever you ask in my name Christ said, when Christ died on the cross He made our access directly to the father. Christ death is enough in connecting us to the father. we have to live according to our identity. we Children of God and heir.
    VIII. activity
each one will be given card where they will fill up. it will be their ID card.
everyone will be given 15 minutes to complete things they needed.
-put this somewhere that you will be reminded of your identity.

  10. For Youth

    HOOK
Answer this riddle: I’m brave at too, I’m afraid at one.
    Answer: bamboo bridge

    BOOK

    Title: One Way
    Text: 1 Timothy 2:5-6
Proposition: Jesus is the only way to God.

    3 truths important to know

I- There is only one God (v.5)
The supreme holy being reaches people to be save (1 John 4:10). He initiates the salvation of men (John 3:16). Meaning, the object of worship resides only to one person that is God. We are not to worship other being aside from God.
II- There is only one mediator (v. 6a)
Jesus provides the access to God (Eph. 2:18). He is the only way that we can draw near to the father (John 14:6) for His name only is given the authority for the salvation of men (Acts 4:12). Jesus is the only person that can mediates us.
III- There is only one sacrifice (v.6b)
Jesus died on our behalf on us (1 Pet. 3:18). And his blood alone is the one suitable that our sins maybe forgiven (Heb. 9:14). Meaning, no other sacrifice is needed, because the sacrifice provided by Christ is already enough to be reconciled back to God.

Conclusion: we can directly approach God upon faith in Jesus Christ because we are being recognized us children of God (John 1:12). Thus no mediating factors are needed aside from the mediation that Jesus provided (1 John 1:9).

Application: we can pray to God, anywhere, anytime, any position. Practice our early morning devotion.

    1. Good points brad :) Indeed there's only One Mediator and its not St. Rafael, St Jude or Mary but Jesus alone. He is the Only way so that man can reconcile God, He is the Only to heaven and eternity. This truth should be the truth that we are holding and believing because this is our ultimate assurance. All people should know this truth about Jesus the real Mediator so that they will not continue with all their beliefs and misconceptions about having someone to mediate.

    Goals:
    1. At the end of session he/she will be able to tell more about the One true Mediator.

    2. At the end of the session he/she will be able to have a personal devotion (consistent prayer) to the One true Mediator.

    Hook:
I will show at least three pictures to them of those people or characters. Like 1 picture of Darna, Spider Man, and Pres. Noynoy Aquino. I’ll ask the students to give at least two words that they say related to the pictures. Then give only 1 word that describes the three is like “helper”. Sometimes when we have problems that are beyond our capacity especially when we see the problem of our society here in the Philippines we think of someone who could help people solve the problem. Sometimes we ask about what Pinoy can do to solve it? Or is there anything Darna can do to solve this problem?
    Book:
I- God desires all men to be saved. (1 Tim. 2:5)
Because of God’s incomparable love for us and He doesn’t like us to suffer in hell, He sent His Son Jesus Christ to save us. Jesus Christ is the Only Way to fulfill the redemptive plan of God and no one else.( 1 Tim. 2:6).
II- God wants all to come to the knowledge of the truth ( 1 Tim. 2:6)
Many of us are seeking for the truth and freedom. But it is very impossible for us to seek the truth if we do not know the source of it. Jesus is the truth, the only source of the truth the One that sets us free and gives us peace. He is the Only way to seek the truth, the only way to have peace and the only wat to heaven (John 16:6).
There is One and Only One Mediator between man and God, and that is Jesus Christ. We cannot call to any other else to solve our problem or the problem of our society because they cannot give it to us. Only Jesus can.
    Look:
In a given clean sheet of paper, based on what they have learned from the session, they need to draw at least two situations they want to do after the session (for example sharing the gospel). They need to put a short description to their drawing that would explain it briefly. Each one should share it to the class.
    Took:

  15. Jesus the Great High Priest

Trust Game : As human we tend to incline in the saying “to see is too believe” whether we want to accept it or not, aware or not we do trust more on things our mind can perceive. We want to be that we can get help. Thus, not to condemn though
    Heb 4:14-16
14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven,[a] Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. 16 Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
    I. Jesus is the only mediator between God and man (I Tim 2:5).
I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— 2for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. 3This is good, and pleases God our Savior,4who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. 5For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, 6who gave himself as a ransom for all people. This has now been witnessed to at the proper time. 7And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostle—I am telling the truth, I am not lying—and a true and faithful teacher of the Gentiles.
    a. His crucifixion brought reconciliation between God and man (2 Cor 5:18).
All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation:
II. He is the living incarnate of God unlike lifeless images (Col 1:13-).
15 iHe is the image of jthe invisible God, kthe firstborn of all creation. 16 For by6 him all things were created, lin heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether mthrones or ndominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created othrough him and for him. 17 And phe is before all things, and in him all things qhold together. 18 And rhe is the head of the body, the church. He is sthe beginning, tthe firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. 19 For uin him all the vfullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20 and wthrough him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, xmaking peace yby the blood of his cross.
III. He gives grace and mercy (Jn 3:16)
    Application:
Let us hold firmly to the faith we profess.
    How?
    1. Trust not on the things below but above.
    2. Images, money, position is not always the answer of the problem. We work to find and use these but not trust on these.
    3. We do not believe on luck, nor any witch crafts.
    4. We do not make our wealth our security.
    5. Everything that has been made to provide for us do not have sensitivity, they cannot feel our need, but God does. We ask through Jesus (Matt7:7).
